Kosher Shopping At Shaul’s Kosher Market

31 Jul

Shaul’s Kosher Market was opened twenty years ago by Shaul Rafael to meet the needs of the Jewish and Israeli communities. The Rabbinical Council of Greater Washington has certified Shaul’s Kosher Market as Kosher, meaning that they follow Kashrut. Kashrut deals with the Jewish law of what foods can and can’t be eaten, and how they are prepared and eaten, and which foods must be separated. The basis of these rules can be found in the book of Leviticus in the bible. The USDA exempts Kosher butchers and slaughterhouses from many of its regulations because they are so sanitary, because of the laws of Kosher. It is much safer than a lot of American foods. There are many rules when eating Kosher foods so it is much easier to just shop at Shaul’s where all the foods are known to be Kosher. These foods are prepared according to the families’ customs and traditions.

Shaul’s Kosher Market also offers catering, platters, salads and takeout. So when you get hungry and you are in the Greater Washington DC area stop by or call so you can be enjoying one of the many platters or take out such as homemade schnitzel, meatloaf, homemade sweet and sour meatballs, or homemade Gefilte fish. If you are looking for that special recipe item or an item made in a certified shop come visit us.

If you have never tried Kosher and would like to try out a recipe just visit Shaul’s Kosher Market. They will help you find the right Kosher items. They always welcome returning customers and friendly new faces to their store.

Easy weeknight chili

16 Jun

This chili recipe is an easy and affordable Kosher meal. You can make it on a weeknight and have it ready for your family in a jiffy, or put it in the crock-pot before work and have dinner ready when you walk in the door. It serves about 6. To save even more time, double it and freeze some in a freezer bag or freezer-safe food storage container for dinner another night.

Here’s what you’ll need:
1lb. ground beef
1 onion, diced
1 bell pepper (any color), diced
2 cloves garlic
1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and finely chopped (optional)
3 cans beans, rinsed and drained (you can use beans of choice, though black, pinto, and kidney are recommended)
1 can tomato sauce
1 can diced tomatoes
1/2 can water
2 tablespoons chili powder
1 teaspoon cumin
Salt and black pepper to taste

1. In a 4 qt. dutch oven, brown ground beef with onion, garlic and peppers. Cook until no longer pink

2. Add in beans, tomato sauce, tomatoes, water, and seasonings. Stir and allow to simmer as long as possible, but for at least 20 minutes. If it becomes too thick, add more water, half a cup at a time.

Alternate crock-pot directions: Brown beef, onion, garlic and peppers in a skillet. Combine with other ingredients in the crock pot. Cook on high for 3 hours or on low for 5-6 hours. For quick clean-up, use a crock-pot liner.

Optional: Garnish with chopped onions, chives, and/or hot sauce for extra flavor. Serve over rice or with parve cornbread on the side.

Awesome Steak Recipe

27 Apr

With the BBQ season just around the corner we thought you’d like to have a little bit of recipe ammo for that grill you just dusted off. Enjoy and don’t forget to pick up some fresh, juicy steaks from Shaul’s Kosher Market located at 1319 Lamberton Dr., Silver Spring, MD 20902.

You’ll get about 4 servings out of this one:

Ingredients

  • 4 (6 ounce) rib-eye steaks
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 8 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 sprigs fresh rosemary

Directions

  1. Preheat grill for high heat.
  2. Rub each steak lightly with olive oil – this is to ensure that the steaks don’t stick to the grill. Season with salt and pepper. Rub fresh garlic into both sides of each steak. Let stand for 15 minutes.
  3. Place the steaks on the preheated grill, and immediately turn after 30 seconds (this first turn is to ensure that one side is seared). Place the fresh rosemary sprigs on top. Cook 7 minutes per side, to desired doneness, remembering to remove the rosemary sprigs before turning, and to replace on top of the meat after turning.
